I’ve only seen two Wes Anderson movies (Darjeeling Limited and Moonrise Kingdom) but they were both very interesting in that I don’t know who their intended audience is.
Most movies that I see are marketed very clearly towards a certain demographic, or at least conform to a certain genre, which has its own set of norms. (Attempts at bending the rules of a genre could be brilliant, but also risk alienating audiences who were expecting to have their expectations met.)
Although I suppose you could say that their genre is ‘Wes Anderson movies’ and their intended audience is hipsters. To quote a humorous blog post I just found:
Any self respecting Hipster would probably marry Wes Anderson if they had the chance. Marry him and have his little hipster filmmaker babies. He makes the best movies ever. He probably makes pretty good babies too. Probably.
So there is that.
